First Place Winner
Daniel Dauber – Saxophone
Daniel Dauber (17) is a senior at West Milford High School and has been studying saxophone privately with Mr. Matthew Gramata since the end of his freshmen year. Over the course of his time at West Milford High, he has been heavily involved in the music program. Daniel has performed in the Wind Ensemble, Pit Orchestra, Marching Band, and Jazz Ensemble throughout most of high school and has served as the principal saxophonist for each ensemble. He has also performed with the North Jersey Area Band, New Jersey Region I Band and New Jersey All State Band during his high school career.
Daniel has also participated in two selective institutes for saxophone during the summer of 2017. He participated in the MPulse Saxophone Institute under the instruction of Dr. Timothy McAllister at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbour. He also participated in the Eastman Summer Saxophone Institute at the Eastman School of Music in New York under the instruction of Professor Chien-Kwan Lin.
In the Fall, Daniel will be pursuing a degree for music performance.
Second Place Winner
Christopher Mantell is a saxophonist and a senior at Randolph High School in Randolph, NJ. He has played the saxophone for eight years, and is actively involved in Randolph High School’s music program, performing in the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Pit Orchestra, Marching Band, Concert Choir, and Chamber Choir. Additionally, he has successfully auditioned for North Jersey Area Band, New Jersey Region I Band, and New Jersey All-State Band. Christopher is in his third season performing professionally with the New Jersey Wind Symphony (formerly the Ridgewood Concert Band). He has been principal soprano saxophonist with the North Jersey Youth Saxophone Ensemble for four years. Christopher won first place in the Ridgewood Concert Band’s 2017 Youth Soloist Competition. He also won the Hanover Wind Symphony Summer Music Scholarship in March of 2017. During this past summer, he attended two music camps to further his education: the Rutgers University Wind Band and Chamber Music Camp and the Mana Saxophone Institute. He was selected to perform with the 2016 Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall Honor Band and The College of New Jersey High School Honors Wind Ensemble in 2015. He was named MAYO Performing Arts Center’s Jazz Musician of the Month of March 2014. Christopher will be attending the State University of New York at Fredonia in the fall to study Music Education and Saxophone Performance.
Third Place Winner
Deborah Jau – Flute
Deborah Jau is a senior at Paramus High School. She has played the flute for 8 years and currently studies with Allison Kiger. Deborah is very involved in the music department at school. She is part of the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Pit Orchestra, and Spartan Marching Band. In the marching band, she was section leader as a junior and drum major as a senior. She has also participated in the Bergen County Band, North Jersey Region I Band, North Jersey Region I Symphony Orchestra, and New Jersey All State Band. Deborah is not planning on pursuing a career in music, but will continue playing flute on the side, as music is a very important part of her life.
