2018 – 2019 Youth Soloist Competition Winners

First Place Winner

Jonathan Yu – Clarinet

Jonathan Yu

Jonathan Yu (16) is a junior at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School and has been playing the clarinet for six years. He is the principal clarinetist for the Wind Ensemble at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School as well as in the Youth Orchestra of the New Jersey Youth Symphony, which he has been a member of for 6 years. He has successfully auditioned for the 2019 New Jersey Region II Band, New Jersey All-State Band and All-State Orchestra, and the 2018 New Jersey Region II Band, New Jersey Region II Orchestra and New Jersey All-State Band. He received the Gold Prize in the Golden Key USA Music Festival along with a performance at Carnegie Hall in May of 2018. He was also invited to perform as a soloist with the Highland Park Municipal Concert Band in June 2018. During the summer of 2018, he attended the Rutgers University Wind Band and Chamber Music Camp.

Second Place Winner

Faith Shim – Flute

Faith ShimFaith Shim started to play the flute at the age of 9 under the tutelage of Ms. Soo-Kyung Park. She has made impressive achievements since then, winning the 1st prize at Camerata Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition(2019), Elite International Competition (2018), Junior Soloist Competition sponsored by Flute Society of Kentucky (2017), and The New York Flute Club’s Young Musicians Contest (2017). She also won the 2nd prize at The Friday Woodmere Music Club Competition (2018), and Camerata Artists International Competition (2017).

She has been a member of Camerata Youth Orchestra for 6 years and has served as the principal flutist for the last two years. Recently, she was selected as a member of NJ Regional HS Wind Ensemble and All-State HS Band (2019).

As a soloist and an orchestra musician, she performed in charity concerts, for the elderly at nursing homes in New Jersey, and in other concerts at Carnegie Weill Recital Hall, Bruno Walter Auditorium in Lincoln Center, Gheen Hall at Campbellsville University, Bergen PAC, NJ PAC, and many more. Currently she majors in Computer Science at Bergen County Technical High School.

Third Place Winner

Nicole Guccione – Euphonium

Nicole GuccioneNicole Guccione is a senior at Suffern High School, and is excited to major in music performance in college. She began playing euphonium in fourth grade, and since then has been selected for All-Eastern Band, All-State Wind Ensemble, Area-All State Band, and Rockland All-County Band. At her school, she is very involved with the music program as she is the Field Major of the Suffern Marching Band, is in pit orchestra and stage crew for Suffern’s theatrical productions, and is in jazz band and brass choir. She also sings in Suffern High School’s Select Choir and LEAD (Life Exists Against Drugs) Club. Outside of school she participates in Rockland County Band in the summer, and in the pit orchestra for Clifford Theater. In addition to music, Nicole is ninth in her class, a member of Suffern High School’s Varsity Softball team, is the President of GSA (Gender-sexuality Alliance) Club, the Vice President of Italian Club/Honor Society, is a co-founder of Quidditch Club, and is a Girl Scout. She wants to thank the NJ Wind Symphony for this amazing experience and is honored to receive this award!
