On The Prizes

First Place: Solo performance with the New Jersey Wind Symphony  on Friday, May 11 2018, and $1,000 scholarship award

Second Place: $500 scholarship award

Third Place: $250 scholarship award

On Eligibility

The 2017 – 2018 New Jersey Wind Symphony Youth Soloist Competition is open to United States citizens and legal non-citizens who are full-time high school band students residing in the following counties: Morris, Bergen, Passaic, Sussex, Hudson, Essex, Union and Rockland.

On The Entry Process

Entering the NJWS Youth Soloist Competition is a two-step process.

Students must submit a typewritten letter with applicant’s name, instrument, address, telephone number, school, grade, e-mail address and a $25 entrance fee (check made payable to New Jersey Wind Symphony) postmarked by February 26, 2018.

In addition to the letter and entrance fee, students must submit a video recording of their piece in mp4 format. Email the mp4 to Ms. Sarracco and Ms. Wise. Accompaniment is not necessary for preliminary audition recordings.

On The Competition Process

The finalists will be chosen March 10th, 2018, and will be notified by phone and email, then by mail if necessary. Finals will be held on March 24, 2018 at the West Side Presbyterian Church located in Ridgewood, NJ. Please check the website www.njwindsymphony.org for updates.
Accompaniment at finals is required. The winners will receive their scholarships and the first place winner will perform with the New Jersey Wind Symphony at the May 11, 2018 concert.

THE NEW JERSEY WIND SYMPHONY (formerly the Ridgewood Concert Band)

The New Jersey Wind Symphony is a volunteer concert band based in Ridgewood, New Jersey. This internationally recognized band consists of instrumentalists from all walks of life, and includes retired members of professional orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic. Led by Music Director Dr. Christian Wilhjelm, the band performs a varied repertoire from pops to transcriptions and from traditional band literature to world premiers of new music. In addition, the group has had the privilege of performing with such soloists as Joseph Alessi, Philip Smith, Phillip Myers, and Joseph Robinson from the New York Philharmonic as well as David Krauss from the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.

Repertoire Requirements

Candidates are to perform a piece of appropriate standard with band accompaniment e.g. a Region Band piece or a piece of similar difficulty. Please consult with teachers or our committee if you are unsure of accompaniment availability.
