Hongrae Kim is a senior student at River Dell Regional High School in New Jersey. At an early age, he received private violin and cello lessons along with performing in an orchestra. Later, he first picked up a saxophone when he took an interest in his middle school band. He has taken private lessons with classical saxophonist Dr. Wonki Lee for nearly five years. Since attending high school, he has participated in his school’s select choir, concert band, Drama club, jazz band, and became a Tri-M Music Honors Society member. Moreover, outside of school, he also participated in MPulse summer camp at Michigan University, Future Leaders of Music Technology Institute for Music Leadership at Eastman School of Music, and the Amadeus Youth Winds Ensemble, where he was once even a featured soloist. He currently attends the Manhattan School of Music Precollege to enhance his musical abilities and career. To further elaborate on his experiences, he’s performed in Weill Recital Hall, Merkin Hall, and Lincoln Center. As a solo performer, Hongrae has been awarded first-place recipient, finalist, and winner in multiple competitions ranging from local to international, such as YoungArts, Prima Volta, Vivo, Camarata, and IGMC. Moreover, he was selected for 3rd place in the 2024-25 Woodwinds, Brass, and Percussion Concerto Competition, a finalist in the Young Artist Solo Competition of the United States Navy Band, and an honorable mention for the 2024 Music Teachers National Association Composition Competition for NJ. He was also the top scorer for the 2022 & 2024 North Jersey band and 2023 Bergen County band auditions. His passion for music, however, extends much further. He has deep ambitions in music composition, karaoke, and content creation on social media platforms. All of these extracurricular activities culminated and contributed to Hongrae’s collegiate life as he recently committed to Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music for the Saxophone.
